Full Life Story

Born on June 7, 1981, Amrita Rao burst onto the Hindi‑film scene as the quintessential girl‑next‑door, turning heads with her debut in Ab Ke Baras (2002) and clinching a Filmfare nod for Best Female Debut. She seized the spotlight with IIFA’s Star Debut of the Year for Ishq Vishk (2003), then rode a wave of box‑office triumphs—Main Hoon Na, Vivah, Masti and the satirical Welcome to Sajjanpur, the latter earning her a Stardust Best Actress award. After a brief slump, Rao roared back in the National‑award‑winning Jolly LLB (2013) and added heavyweight supporting turns in Singh Saab the Great, Satyagraha and the biopic Thackeray. Expanding her reach, she headlined the TV drama Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai (2016) as a singer. Hailing from a Konkani‑speaking Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin family, she studied psychology at Sophia College before swapping textbooks for the runway, and shares the spotlight with her actress sister Preetika Rao. Global superstar Amrita Rao has been dazzling audiences with her captivating presence on the big screen for nearly two decades, leaving an indelible mark on the Indian film industry. Her breakout role came in 2007 with the Telugu action film Athidhi, where she sizzled alongside the dashing Mahesh Babu under the direction of Surender Reddy. Critics raved about the chemistry between Rao and her co-star, with Radhika Rajamani of Rediff.com praising her debut in Telugu cinema, saying she "makes a mark." Her subsequent releases in 2008, including My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves and Welcome to Sajjanpur, showcased her impressive range as an actress, with the latter earning her a Stardust Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Kamala. Her performance in Welcome to Sajjanpur was particularly notable, with Hindustan Times hailing her as "sweetness personified." In 2009, Rao made her television debut as a judge on the reality show Perfect Bride, followed by a starring role in the comedy-drama Victory opposite Harman Baweja. However, the film failed to impress, grossing a meager ₹ 1 crore at the box office. She also appeared in Short Kut: The Con is On, Neeraj Vora's comedy-drama opposite Akshaye Khanna, but received negative reviews for her performance. Despite this, Rao continued to take on challenging roles, including the romantic-comedy Love U...Mr. Kalakaar!, which, although panned by critics, earned her praise for her portrayal of a daughter of a businessman. Amrita Rao makes a triumphant comeback to the big screen after a five-year hiatus, starring in the 2019 biopic Thackeray, where she embodies the role of Meena Thackeray, the devoted wife of Balasaheb Thackeray. Despite receiving mixed reviews, Rao's performance as the picture-perfect homemaker is a testament to her versatility. She's back in business, reprising her role as Sandhya in Jolly LLB 3 opposite Arshad Warsi in 2025, marking her return to the cinema after a six-year break. The film earns her a standing ovation from critics, who praise her return to form.
